A home gym requires a flat and sturdy floor to safely set up most weightlifting equipment. While some may think of their garage or basement as their best option, concrete floors can sometimes be graded to direct moisture to a drain pipe. This means larger equipment like cable machines and squat racks will sit unevenly and can potentially be a safety issue.
When designing your home gym DreamSpace, consider our Tongue and Groove 2”x8” flooring. These floors are made to support large amounts of weight without bowing, and can hold up to impact from any dropped weights.
Wall-mounted, multipurpose “Total Gyms” like Tonal have been growing in popularity. It’s easy to see why. They offer a complete workout using a machine that barely takes up any space. The catch is that it needs to be securely fastened to your home’s framing before you can use it. This can pose an issue for those with older plaster walls, or those who’d rather not damage their homes walls
Luckily, a home gym shed is built with exposed studs ready to use. We build our shed frames with industry standard 16” on center studs, which is compatible with most wall mounted machines. And, in most cases, the studs are exposed meaning there’s no guesswork required during installation.
Keeping your home gym comfortable during your workout is more important than you think. A hot gym can stifle anyones motivation to work out. Plus, the potential for heat exhaustion is much higher.
Luckily, a Lapp Structures shed’s temperature can easily be controlled with a ductless mini split HVAC system. The wall mounted evaporator takes up next to no space inside, while the noisier condenser stays outside. You can even take this comfort a step further and have spray foam insulation installed to save on heating and cooling costs.
Many workouts like overhead presses will require you to lift above your head. This can be an issue for some using their basement as a home gym because the ceiling isn’t high enough to allow full range of motion.
When designing your perfect home gym, consider a style with a steeper roof pitch to allow more vertical space. A New England Barn, Colonial Garden Shed, or perhaps even a standard Garden Shed would be perfect shed styles.
Some workout equipment can be rather large. Take for instance this Smith Machine measuring in at a whopping 83.5”L x 67.8”W. Trying to move something like that inside your home can be a challenge, especially when you have to bring it down cramped hallways and staircases.
By comparison, moving something this size into a shed is hardly a problem at all. First of all, your home gym shed will always be at ground level, meaning no stairs to deal with. Secondly, you can customize your shed with spacious double doors, or even overhead garage doors. Whether you need to move in a treadmill, elliptical, or squat rack, it’s never an issue when you’re using a shed.
Ultimately, the best part about using a shed as your home gym is that it’s totally customized for your specific needs. Whatever your fitness needs may be, our design consultants can help guild you to your perfect DreamSpace. Whether it’s extra outlets, climate control, or higher walls, our team has the knowledge and experience to make your dream a reality.
For gardeners who live in the Northeast, the cold temperatures and short nights of Winter means an unwilling break from their favorite hobby. The constant threat of frost puts even the heartiest of plants in danger. Plus, the lack of sunlight will keep most plant life dormant. However, there is still an option out there for those impatient gardeners who just can’t wait for warmer spring months.
Gardening with a greenhouse means hobbyist growers can start their plants far earlier than usual. The clear, insulating walls of a greenhouse let the sun’s light and warmth pass through, while holding it in to create an ideal environment for your crops.
Lapp Structures has been delivering greenhouses built and designed BY gardeners FOR gardeners for nearly ten years. Over those years we’ve picked up a few tips that we’d like to share with those interested in taking their hobby to the next level by gardening with a greenhouse.
A Greenhouse allows you to provide an ideal environment for whatever plants you’d like to grow. This level of control opens up a wealth of options to gardeners including:
Most plants are at their most vulnerable when they’re young. The higher temperatures and humidity in a greenhouse provide a perfect environment for seedlings. This means that plants get the best start possible. Once transplanted, these seedlings can grow heartier and stronger than others.
Some tropical plants like citrus trees and dragonfruit simply cannot grow to maturity in the north’s shorter growing season. A greenhouse can provide these plants with the tropical climate they require to bear fruit. Some additional heat and light may be required.
While most plants will go dormant through winter, some root vegetables and leafy greens will continue growing into winter as long as it doesn’t get too cold. A greenhouse, especially one with an additional heat source, can keep some crops going all year round. This process of growing plants through winter is referred to as “overwintering.”
One of the first things you’ll need to consider when gardening with a greenhouse is which type of structure will be best suited for you. Greenhouses come in all sorts of styles, but most can be grouped into 3 main categories.
Typically a great choice for those who want to try Gardening with a greenhouse, without investing too heavily in it. Cold Frames are raised garden beds or boxes that include some kind of removable glazing cover for protection against the colder elements.
They’re a relatively cheap and easy way to provide plants with warmth and humidity, but they are usually short on vertical space needed for taller plants.
As the name implies, attached greenhouses are structures that are attached to another type of building. They can range in size from enclosed window boxes, all the way to greenhouses that are the same size as the wall they’re attached to, usually of a house or shed.
Having a sturdy wall to build off of means attached greenhouses can be very stable. They can also be custom built to provide as much space as you’ll need. Your only limit is the wall it’s being fastened to! Having that solid wall on one side can cut down on the amount of sunlight your plants will get though.
Being used as a kind of “catch all” classification, freestanding greenhouses are dedicated structures made specifically for growing. They can be completely custom built to meet a gardener’s needs. There’s also a wide variety of glazing, or siding, that a freestanding greenhouse can be built with. We’ll talk about these materials next.
While freestanding greenhouses can be tailored to the needs of the gardener, they are more of an investment compared to a Cold Frame. Dedicated and experienced growers will certainly get the most from these structures.
Glazing refers to the type of material being used as a greenhouse siding. It will be the main deciding factor for your greenhouse’s initial cost, longevity, and overall effectiveness. That’s why it’s important to know the pros and cons for each material.
When gardening with a greenhouse, there are 4 common types of glazing to choose from.
Plastic film is the one of the most popular glazing materials out there, thanks to its low costs, and ease of installation. It’s wonderful at diffusing light, meaning it allows the sun’s energy to pass through straight to your plant life. Plus, it can be a decent insulator, especially if you double up on layers.
It’s not all good news though, as plastic film has a fairly short lifespan. Over time, sunlight and temperature swings can turn your film brittle, and susceptible to tears. It can also yellow over time, which reduces the amount of light your plants receive.
Glass is considered by most experts to be the ideal material for greenhouse glazing. Thanks to its unmatched light diffusion, plants grown in a glass greenhouse are able to soak up more energy for photosynthesis. Double layered glass is also a highly effective insulator that holds up extremely well to sun exposure and temperature swings.
There are two major cons when considering a glass glazing: the cost, and its low impact resistance. Double layered insulated glass is considerably more expensive than other options. While they hold up well to long-term environmental changes, they can still shatter and crack from impacts and may need to be replaced from time to time.
This glazing material is a popular choice for areas that experience more extreme weather, like frequent hail. Fiberglass is a relatively inexpensive material that holds up well to impact. It also require less structural backing when compared to glass.
While it can hold up well in the short term, it’s longevity is not great. Fiberglass tends to swell over long periods of UV exposure. In as little as 5 years, the UV breakdown of fiberglass can severely limit the amount of sunlight exposure to your plants. It’s also very combustible, which is a major concern for any hobbyist gardener out there.
Polycarbonate is one of the newest materials to be adopted as greenhouse glazing. It hits a sweet spot between long-term resilience and impact resistance, and reasonable cost. It’s also light and flexible which makes it easy to work with. Plus, twin-wall polycarbonate has very good light diffusion, and is an even better insulator than plastic film & fiberglass.
We may be a little biased, but we firmly believe that polycarbonate is your best long-term option when gardening with a greenhouse. That’s why all of our greenhouse styles feature twin-wall polycarbonate panels in their construction.
Like with everything, there are some downsides to polycarbonate though. Lower quality panels can yellow after long periods of sun exposure. Also, when not assembled properly, moisture can become trapped in twin-wall panels which encourages algae growth. The initial price tag for polycarbonate is also higher than most glazing options, but is usually worth it in the long run.
Gardening with a greenhouse gives you an enclosed space with more control over its environment, but it’s not completely self-regulating. Temperatures in your greenhouse can still reach dangerously high or low levels depending on your area. You may want to consider some extra accessories to help you better control its growing conditions.
Ventilation in your greenhouse should be an absolute necessity. If left unchecked, temperatures inside can climb to dangerously high levels, leaving your plants inside weak and wilted. Plus, most plants respond positively to light airflow.
If purchasing a custom greenhouse from Lapp Structures, consider our Solar Fan Vent Package, which includes fan, louvered vent, thermostat, and solar panel. This kit will give you everything necessary to help keep your greenhouse’s temperature in check without needing an electrical hookup.
Heaters may be necessary if you live in an area that experiences long stretches of below-freezing temperatures. Regardless of how good your insulation is, chances are you’ll need some extra heat to keep your plants in a comfortable climate.
There are many types and sizes of greenhouse heaters available. Which type you should choose depends on your greenhouse’s dimensions. Smaller greenhouses (around 200 – 400 square feet) that are not connected to your home’s electric can make use of small propane heaters, or even solar powered options. Larger greenhouses with an electric hookup should consider a larger mounted electric heater that can keep up with even the coldest of conditions.
If you plan overwintering your crops, or germinating your plants during the winter months, a grow light should be seriously considered. The shorter days of winter mean plants won’t receive an adequate amount of sunlight to sustain themselves. Overwintering crops will go dormant, and germinating seeds will grow thin and lanky in a desperate attempt to grow closer to its light source.
There are different types of grow lights available to you, so you should consider a light’s initial upfront cost, vs it’s cost to run. High-Intensity Discharge (HID) bulbs can be inexpensive to set up, but their high heat discharge and energy consumption mean they can cost more over time. By contrast, LED panels have become quite popular recently, due to lower operating cost. Unfortunately, they don’t provide as much light as HID bulbs, and can be pricier to set up initially.
A gardener should not take their choice of grow light lightly. We recommend taking some time to research your plants’ specific needs and choose accordingly. We also recommend setting your lights up on an automatic timer to ensure your plants stay on a regular cycle.
As most seasoned gardeners will tell you; gardening is easy to pick up, but hard to do consistently well. Gardening with a greenhouse shouldn’t be seen as a foolproof method to bigger crops. Rather, it’s a tool that allows you to enjoy your hobby longer than normally possible.
There’s a nearly endless well of gardening information to learn, but it will ultimately come up to you to decide what’s best for you, and your specific gardening needs.
If you’re ready to take the plunge, and enjoy nearly year-round growing, consider giving us a call! Lapp Structures can deliver a high-quality polycarbonate greenhouse designed and built BY gardeners FOR gardeners.
We currently offer three different freestanding styles of greenhouses that are all as attractive as they are functional. We can even build an attached greenhouse to nearly any of our shed & garage styles!

It’s a question that nearly every shed owner will need to ask themselves at one point: Should I repair my shed? Maybe the bottom two feet of siding has begun to rot, or its shingles have begun to curl, or the front door just doesn’t quite close all the way. Either way, you’ll need to ask if a shed repair makes sense, or should I simply order a new one?
At Lapp Structures, we design, build, and deliver custom sheds, garages, and poolhouses. With a proper foundation, and routine maintenance, our structures can realistically last 20 – 30 years. But maybe you’ve inherited an old shed from a home purchase, or perhaps the structure is simply getting that old.
This is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing to repair your shed or replace. Just like with any structure, some problems you’ll encounter are easier to fix than others. Here are just a few example of common problems we’ve seen with older structures
Runoff from your shed roof can sometimes splash back onto the structure. Over time, this excessive moisture can absorb into the shed’s exterior, causing it to rot. The water-damaged parts of the structure will need to be replaced altogether in most cases.
If caught early enough, a shed repair could be possible. A small area of damaged wood siding can be cut out, replaced, and covered with a vinyl siding exterior for example. If left untreated for too long though, the damage can add up, and a full replacement makes more sense.
More importantly, the issue that’s causing the excessive moisture problem will need to be addressed. More often than not, this comes down to an issue with the sheds foundation.
Lapp Structures recommends any structure be placed on a crushed stone pad that’s at least 6″ deep, and two feet larger than the dimensions of your shed. This will ensure moisture falling off the shed’s roof will drain safely through the stone.
Depending on the nature of the damage, repairing an asphalt roof can make a lot of sense. For example, if individual shingles have been damaged from hail or wind, a shed repair is simply a matter of replacing them before more damage is done.
On the other hand, asphalt shingles do have a limited lifespan. Most advertise a 30-year span, but it’s possible they can fail quicker than expected for a number of reasons.
In the Northeast, shingles can be damaged by quick changes in temperature. These temperature swings cause the asphalt shingles to expand and contract, sometimes causing cracks. These fluctuations in temperature can also decrease the effectiveness of their adhesive strip.
If you’re dealing with any of these symptoms of an aging roof, you may want to consider a replacement over a shed repair. Depending on the size of your roof, the costs can add up. Plus, chances are if your roof is aging, so is the rest of the structure. Instead of investing time and money in repairs, a full replacement can be worth it for the piece of mind a new structure provides.
A terror for any homeowner, termites and ants are responsible for billions of dollars of damage every single year. Termites are especially voracious, and are capable of causing severe damage to a structure in a matter of days.
Can you repair a shed with termite and ant damage? The answer, again, depends on how early you notice the problem.
Infestations must be dealt with immediately, preferably by a licensed exterminator. Once your shed is cleared of these pests, it’s time to take inventory of the damage.
Small amounts of damage to a shed’s frame can be replaced or bolstered, as well as sections of wood siding. A full replacement may make more sense if multiple foundation runners, or studs have been affected.
Sticking doors and windows may not sound severe, but it’s certainly a major inconvenience. If you start to notice your door doesn’t close as nicely as it used to, you may want to consider your shed’s foundation.
If your shed’s foundation is not level, the structure can begin to settle unevenly. When this happens, the frame of the structure becomes slightly skewed, which places excess stress on your doors and windows.
A shed repair is certainly possible in this situation. The hardest step in fixing this problem would be jacking up the entire structure. This will then allow someone to level off the (preferably crushed stone) foundation.
If you find yourself needing to replace your old, or damaged structure, we’re here to help. Lapp Structures has been designing, building, and delivering custom sheds, garages for over 30 years. Give us a call or contact us to speak with a friendly Design Consultant to guide you to your next DreamSpace.
We can even help with removing your old shed while we’re there!
So you just had your brand new DreamSpace from Lapp Structures delivered! You spent countless hours thinking over its design. Took the time and care to have a proper stone pad built. You even landscaped your yard so the new shed fits right in. At this point, you’re more than ready to start making it your own, and enjoying the new space.
Unfortunately, you may not be the only one eager to start using your brand new shed…
Did you know that those cute, typically harmless, gray squirrels that are everywhere in PA are responsible for millions of dollars worth of property damages each year? The same applies to other small animals like rabbits, groundhogs, voles, racoons, and so many more.
Critters like these are always on the lookout for a convenient hiding space for shelter. Unfortunately, the spaces in between a shed’s floor joists can make the perfect space for these animals to take up residence.
While it may seem like a fun idea at first to have a family of adorable bunnies living nearby, things can quickly turn sour when their drive to chew kicks in. Suddenly, that family of rabbits, or squirrels, or groundhogs that have been living outside, will slowly make their way inside; right through your flooring.
It’s a tale we at Lapp Structures have heard countless times. So, is there anything that can be done to keep these damaging Critters out of your brand new shed?
Meet the latest shed option from Lapp Structures: Critter Guard.
Critter Guard consists of a series of powder-coated, heavy-gauge wire mesh segments that can be secured around the outside perimeter of any shed . The heavy-gauge wiring can hold up to the most veracious of chewers. Plus its powder-coated exterior will withstand years of outdoor exposure.
Critter Guard needs to be installed after your shed has been placed on its crushed stone pad. Once you’re happy with your shed’s placement, our dedicated delivery drivers will get to work installing your critter guard in four easy steps:
Step #1: The installer will dig out a small trench in your crushed stone pad, along the end of your shed’s foundation runners (varies by width of shed).
Step #2: The installer will begin fastening the wire mesh segments to the flooring of your shed. The wire mesh will be cut so that it ends up resting in the trench that has been dug in the previous step.
Step #3: The mesh segments will then be secured together at each foundation runner to form one unified, protective barrier.
Step #4: Gravel is then backfilled into the trench so that it completely covers the bottom of the wire mesh, ensuring nothing can crawl underneath it.
That’s all there is to it! Once installed, Critter Guard will make it nearly impossible for rodents to take up residence under your shed, while still allowing air to pass through to keep your flooring nice and dry.
The pricing on Critter Guard will depend on the width of your new shed.
10’ – 14’ wide sheds will cost $295.00 to install Critter Guard
6’ – 8’ wide sheds will cost $460.00 to install Critter Guard
“Why does it cost more to add Critter Guard to a smaller shed?” you may ask.
A foundation runner will always be placed at the very edge of each eave with wider sheds, meaning we only need Critter Guard on your shed’s Gable sides.
For smaller sheds that require less structural support, the runner will not be installed at the very edge of both eaves for hauling purposes, meaning critters can enter the underside of your shed on all four sides.
To put it plainly – wider sheds only need Critter Guard on their gable side, whereas narrower sheds will need it installed around the entire perimeter.
If you’re interested in having us build you a new DreamSpace and in keeping it free from critters and varmints alike, give us a call! Our team of friendly Design Consultants can help guide you to the perfect, squirrel-free shed of your dreams.

There often comes a time when an uncomfortable decision must be made when a loved one reaches an age where they’re no longer able to take care of themselves as easily. Where will they stay when they reach retirement age?
To offer the daily support aging loved-ones need, many will turn to the services of a retirement home, or community. Unfortunately, those making this major transition fear they’ll lose the independence they’ve enjoyed their whole adult lives.
Before you and your loved one makes this life-changing decision it’s important to consider another option that’s been gaining in popularity recently. Aging in place with an ADU, or Accessory Dwelling Unit.
For the uninitiated, an ADU is a secondary living space that shares property with another residence. Think a tiny home on the same property with a full sized home, or the second floor of a garage converted to an apartment. If you’re interested, you can read more about accessory dwelling units here.
Aging in place with the help of an ADU can be the perfect compromise that allows your loved ones to retain their sense of independence, while being close enough to family when they need some extra help. In this article we’ll cover X reasons aging in place can be a better alternative to assisted living.
It’s no secret that the cost of assisted living communities have skyrocketed over the years. It varies from state to state, but the average cost of an assisted living is about $4000 per month. While making the decision for aging in place carries a higher upfront cost, the investment could begin paying for itself in just a few years.
Pricing something like an ADU can be tricky since there’s so many customizations to consider, but expect a price range between 80k – 120k for a fully functional living space with electricity, plumbing, and sewage.
Now, it’s not just the living space that an assisted living home provides. As the name implies, assisted living provides not only a space for your loved ones to stay, but also the security of nursing professionals to offer their attention when needed. Luckily, aging in place with an ADU has an option to cover that as well.
Many companies offer At Home health aid services for those who do not need around-the-clock care. Often, these services are far more affordable than that offered by a full time home. At Home care can vary based on the scope of services needed, but on average expect to pay about $16 – $24 per hour.
With the recent spread of Coronavirus, this point is more important than ever. The CDC has recommended that seniors should practice social distancing to protect themselves from infection. That can be easier said than done when your loved one is in an assisted living home with potentially hundreds of other residents.
When an outside visitor or vendor introduces a virus, it can easily spread throughout, causing an outbreak that can infect the entire population. Luckily, aging in place can drastically cut down on the amount of exposure one would face in assisted living. They’ll even have the perfect spot to quarantine themselves if needed.
The feeling of isolation is a real problem that affects many of those entering assisted living. The problem is even worse if the home is far away from any relatives.
Studies have shown that frequent visits with aging loved ones can help ward off mental and physical problems as they age. Even quick and simple visits can have a huge impact. Quick chats during a leisurely walk, or cooking a simple meal together can give you a chance to connect when they need it most.
Aging in place with an ADU removes all the common barriers for visitation. Time and distance needed to visit your loved ones will no longer be a factor when they’re in your own back yard! Plus, they’ll still have a space all to their own when they want it.
As loved ones age, their mobilities needs may become more important than ever. Those needs can easily be addressed during the design phase of building an ADU.
Lapp Structures has been building customized structures for decades, which means we can provide the perfect shell that will accommodate your interior design requirements.
With all this freedom you can build nearly any solution for a loved one’s needs. When planning these out, there are a few staples that should always be included.
Think about wider doorways to accommodate walkers or scooters. Lowering the height of cabinets will allow those who are unable to stand reliably to still reach clean dishes. Install rails down any hallways, and consider non-slip flooring or carpet instead of hardwood, or tile.
It would be an understatement to say choosing the perfect living situation for yourself, or a loved one will be difficult. With so many options to consider, it’s impossible to say one option will always be better than the other.
An ADU is no replacement for those who need around the clock care from trained professionals. Also, the sense of community some feel when living with a community of peers cannot be replicated in a private ADU.
For those looking for a space to call their own while they enjoy their golden years near friends and family then an ADU could be just right. If this sounds like you, give us a call and speak with a friendly Design Consultants. They’ll help guide you to the right structure, and team of contractors to build the perfect ADU for your needs.

It’s a story that repeats itself every year. New year new me, and for a lot of people out there, that means focusing on improving their health. Unfortunately, that also means gyms can be absolutely packed during the first few weeks of the year.
It can make starting this new, healthier lifestyle that much harder. Fighting traffic after work just to get to the gym, constantly waiting for machines to open up, crowded locker rooms… Not fun at all.
Here at Lapp Structures, we just may have the perfect solution to keep your health goals on track. The detached home gym shed. A space where you can easily escape to to focus on yourself and attaining those goals. We’ll explain what to look for in the structure, as well as recommendations to help you stay on track.
What are the absolute necessities for a home gym? Chances are you’ll be moving quite a lot. Stretching, jumping, lifting, running, so open space is a must. Both floor space AND vertical space, so you’re not banging your hands on the ceiling while attempting that new yoga pose.
That means you’ll want a shed style with a steeper roof pitch to give you all the overhead space you’ll need. Look at our Colonial Garden Shed, New England Barn, or High Barn. Not only will this extra vertical space help during your workout, it also opens up the possibility for a loft for extra storage space. Do you need more than just a home gym? Consider a two story garage, and build your gym in the second story!
Ventilation is also key. There’s nothing worse than trying to work out in a stuffy space. When choosing the perfect shed style for your home gym, make sure you have plenty of windows to crack for when you start to warm up.
That means our Studio shed style could also be the perfect fit for you. With two rows of windows in the front you’ll have plenty of ventilation to keep you cool. Plus, the extra natural light can help your overall mood while staying motivated.
Once you have the style nailed down, you’ll need to consider what options you’ll want for a home gym. There’s plenty to choose from, so it’s important to consider your health goals.
Are you trying to shed some weight, or improve your heart health? Sounds like you’ll need a lot of cardio in your routine. If that’s the case you’ll definitely want to consider an electric package. Unless you plan on running in place, you’ll need the outlets to plug in your treadmill, or elliptical. Plus, it gives you the option to mount a TV, so you have something to help pass the time. We can even add a ceiling fan receptacle box to help you keep cool during those last few minutes of your routine.
For smaller equipment you should also think about adding shelves to your new home gym. Excess clutter can be a stresser that can keep you from being consistent, so make sure your jump ropes, water bottles, weights, and yoga mats have a place to live when they’re not in use.
On the other end of the health spectrum we have people looking to GAIN weight, and build their strength. If your health goals require storing, and lifting heavy weights you may want to consider our sturdier 2 x 8 tongue and groove flooring .
Our standard floors can certainly hold up to a typical workout session, but you never know when you’ll need to drop a dumbbell. If that situation ever happens, it’s nice to have peace of mind that it won’t crash through the floor.
Regardless of what style shed or options you choose, it’s important that you actually enjoy being in your new home gym. Consistency is key when improving one’s health, so make sure to include all the creature comforts you’ll need.
Do you think of yourself as an audiophile? A decent set of speakers can pump out the tunes needed to inspire you to work through that extra rep. Do you use protein shakes to recover after a stressful workout? A mini fridge in your home gym means you can grab that relief as soon as you need it.
Whatever you choose to fill it with, chances are your home gym is going to be way more comfortable than dealing with the “New Years crowd” at your local gym. Plus, you’ll be all the more motivated to reach your 2020 health goals with your own space at home.
So do yourself a favor and give us a call to start designing your very own. Our Design Consultants will provide years of experience to deliver the perfect home gym for you. When 2021 rolls around you can be proud of the new you you’ve become.
