Crushed Stone vs Concrete Pad

When it comes to shed foundations, you essentially have two great options. We strongly recommend one over the other for most customers.

The Crushed Stone Base

A crushed stone or gravel pad is typically used for most customers. It is less permanent, more easily removable, and, most importantly, provides superior drainage.

The Requirements for a Crushed Stone Pad

We recommend a minimum 6″ deep crushed stone base that is at least two feet larger than your building in both directions. For instance, a 10’x12′ shed needs a 12’x14′ pad. The extra perimeter space is vital for channeling rainwater away from the structure.

The Concrete Pad

A concrete pad is great for more permanent placements, though this option is much more expensive and labor-intensive than a crushed stone base.

The Critical Requirement

The size of the concrete pad must exactly match the size of your shed floor to ensure proper water drainage. If the pad is any larger, water will pool on the exposed concrete edge and wick directly into the bottom of the shed siding and frame, creating a major moisture problem. 

Why to Never Use Cinder Blocks

While cheap, blocks provide an unstable foundation. Early settling will cause your shed to sit unevenly, putting stress on the overall structure.

Location, Leveling, and Logistics

The process of preparing your site for delivery can be broken down into three logical phases.

Phase 1: Planning and Permits

Before you break ground, make sure you’ve covered all the administrative basics

• Permits: Check with your local township or municipality to see if a building permit is required for your new storage shed.
• Location: Determine the exact spot. Consider property lines, local setbacks, and easy access to the shed. Make sure the site allows for adequate drainage away from the foundation.

Phase 2: Site Alterations and Leveling

The success of your foundation rests on starting with a level base.

• Leveling the Ground: If your site isn’t level, you will need to excavate the high side to create a level area before laying down the foundation material.
• Pad Construction: For a crushed stone pad, remove the topsoil, lay down landscape fabric to prevent weeds, and then fill the area with the appropriate depth of stone.
